Why is my pet overweight?
Is your pet suffering with a weight issue ? It is not too late to address this. There are many dangers associated with having an overweight pet.
They might experience stress on their bones and joints,increased risk of diabetes, pancreatitis, fatty liver and possibly respiratory problems.
One of the main reasons that weight control diets do not work for your pet is that many manufacturers have tried to create a product that will fill your pet with low calorie bulk and unnecessary nutrition. Your animal is a carnivore and must eat a diet that is in sync with his biological needs.
One of the main differences that must be noted is the large percentage of your pets calories are in the form of complex carbohydrates. These ingredients are in the form of corn, barley, wheat, rice and soy products.
There is no need in your pets diet for a diet of HIGH carbohydrates! The calories from carbohydrates are substituted in place of the necessary protein content found in that of animal protein.
The symptoms of diabetes can develop very gradually, and include the following:
1. Increased urination. The first thing that often happens is blood sugar levels become so high outside the cells of your pet’s body that it spills into the urine, increasing urine production. You might notice your dog or cat is urinating more frequently or is having accidents in the house.
2. Increased thirst. Increased urination will in turn cause an increase in thirst, so you might also notice your pet emptying his water dish more often.
Increased thirst and urination are hallmarks of a diabetic condition, so those are things you’ll want to watch closely for, especially as your pet ages. Unfortunately, increased thirst and urine output are also signs of other serious health problems, so regardless of the age or condition of your dog or cat, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms.
3. Increased appetite. Another symptom you might notice is increased appetite. Your pet will be hungrier because the amino acids needed inside the cells aren’t getting there, or aren’t being used appropriately.
4. Weight loss. When the cells of your pet’s body are being starved of essential nutrients, the result is often an increase in appetite.
But because the energy from food is not being used efficiently by the body’s cells, your pet can lose weight even though he’s taking in more calories.
5. Tiredness and lack of energy. Other symptoms you might notice in your pets' are lethargy and lack of energy. When the cells of your pet’s body are deprived of blood sugar, he will often exhibit a general lack of desire to run, take a walk with you, or engage in play. Lack of activity and an increased need for sleep are typical in animals suffering from Type II diabetes.
6. Vision problems. Another symptom of diabetes in companion animals is blindness, which is seen primarily in dogs, but cats can also develop blindness as a result of diabetic cataracts.
7. Urinary tract infections. It’s not at all uncommon for diabetic dogs and cats to acquire secondary urinary tract infections. This happens because the more sugar there is in the urine, the greater the likelihood that bacteria will grow in your pet’s bladder.
8. Kidney failure. Kidney failure, especially in cats, is also a common secondary symptom of diabetes. Often the first diagnosis for a diabetic kitty is chronic renal insufficiency or acute kidney problems. The sugar that is meant to be retained in your pet’s bloodstream but spills over into the urine is very damaging to the kidneys.

How safe are the "spot-on" flea killers"?
All pesticides have some degree of health risks to humans and animals.
Do you know that these spot-on flea products enter our pets' internal organs and then move straight into their intestines.
Have we questioned what these pesticides are doing to our pets immune system?
We need to strengthen their immune systems not depress them!
These are toxins that are running rampant through your pets' bodies.
Maybe that is the reason why they have all kinds of skin allergies and new cancers appearing in their bodies at such a young age.
The main ingredients in many spot-on preparations include imidacloprid, fipronil, permethrin,and pyriproxyfen.
I know you are saying what are all these ingredients doing to my pet or to me?
So, how do we continue to administer these poisons into our pets and what will happen if my pet is not protected?
To understand the risks associated with any of the flea products that are on the market you must look at the various different components in the different flea products.
Most people assume that only the "active" ingredient in a chemical product is of concern!
Well that is not true, there are "inert" ingredients that can be as toxic as the active ingredients.
So what do some of these "active" and "inert" chemicals do to our pets?
Most vets will tell you that these products are not absorbed into our pet's system, but have you ever smelled
your pets breath after you have applied the spot on pesticides? It is immediately absorbed into the system.
Let's start with the four general categories of insecticides.
Fipronil,Imidacloprid, Methoprene, Permethrin are all "active" ingredients and carcinogens!
Skin problems such as severe itching of the skin or redness, nervous system damage such as loss of appetite or underactivity are just some of the side effects to just these few "active" ingredients.
Now, these were just the listed active ingredients! Look up the "inert" ingredients on the box and you tell me in the comments what you find!
I have many clients who visit our market and tell me that their pets start biting and scratching their bodies after 7-10 days of administering their monthly topical flea product. Does this ring a bell ?
I am not writing this blog to get into the reason why pesticide manufacturers don't have to disclose all the ingredients in their products ... I am simply making you aware of the problems associated with using spot on topical flea products.

Barbara hi! I'ts Barbara in Lantana. Let's see if you receive this e-mail! This morning I noticed they ate with the same gusto, but didn't eat as much. Their bodies must have realized that the food didn't have all the filler that they would burn through more quickly so they didn't have to consume as much. The Mack and Jack is still a success and they like the Asian Fusion. No vomiting today! Yay!
Boots is now 5 years with me. Right from the start, his BM has been watery and extremely smelly. At times he had some droppings on the floor. I had his stool checked by different Vet clinics, with no results. One Vet diagnosed him with irritable bowel syndrome, another with colitis. We had him on IAMS Veterinary Formula – Intestinal low Residue with no success. For months I added Plataeris drops to a little soft food. No improvement.
When the Iams was discontinued, we went back with Hills I/D.
Lately he had more than the usual drops of blood in his stool and he soiled daily outside the litter box. It got worse and he lost 1/2 pound since September..
The Vet redid the blood tests and re-examined the fecal. None of it, showed anything out of the ordinary. Boots was put on on Metronidazole 100mg. and Hills Feline Z/D. All hell broke loose. He not only soiled in the laundry room, but all over. I don’t minded the cleaning, but he obviously was in much discomfort. I could not reach the Vet that day. I talked to a friend of mine. Within 24 hours, no more leaking stool, and no more vomit. He is back to his old self. If that is not a miracle, I don't know what is. What a relief this is for the entire household.

Great news!! Our dog Riley is recovered from his kidney failure and we'll be able to pick him up this afternoon! We have to bring him in for blood testing tomorrow, but all looks good. just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the time you took to explain the different foods and to review Bella's issues and make recommendations.
As you know, Bella has had colitis since after she was about a year old (she is now almost 3). She has alwayS been on very good quality foods as I mentioned, however, about every month or so she would have an episode. I would have to cook a bland diet and she would be better in a couple of days. The frustrating part was that even if it went away and I was always cautious with her diet, she always had a reoccurance.
You recommended the RAW. I'll be honest it was hard at first with the whole raw thing, but I would try anything if I knew it would help her. She has now been on the Primal and also during the past couple of weeks on Ziwi Peak Venison as well.
Bella looks amazing since she started her new diet!! Her skin cleared up (she had red itchy skin and thinning hair on the belly, etc). Her ears are beautiful and pink - no more red itchy ears!! She lost at least a 1 1/2! (she is a Chihuahua so that is a lot of weight) - she looks beautiful with her new thin waist and beautiful smooth coat! Best of all - no more colitis!! Maggie, nine and a half (left) and Lexi, seven, next month (right) demanded that I tell you how happy they are now and how great they feel after being on their new, raw diets that you recommended. In two weeks, Lexi will have her first ever ‘itch free’ birthday! Born and raised in Arizona until we moved here in July, they are half-sisters from the same blue-ribbon winning dad but different blue-ribbon winning moms. “Dad was truly a stud”, they tell us! Lexi has always had severe allergies. Her skin was continuously developing little welts and she was forever scratching and licking herself and just plain miserable. We tired everything short of the expensive allergy tests, to figure out what was wrong. The dermatologist vet thought it was the desert grass and trees and the move here might help her. It did not.

This is a story about a year and a half baby girl named Sarite a long haired shepherd. She had stopped eating many times and was loosing weight major diarrhea and vomiting blood. She was diagnosed with Addison's disease , bleeding ulcers, and IBD (irritable bowl disease) after spending thousands of dollars at the vet, once again finding the right food was a very hard task. After meeting with Barbara and Howard after hours of talking and analyzing Sarite's eating. We were told by the vet that it would take 6 months to a year before Sarite would ever have normal bowls as well numerous meds and needles were happening at the time. After Barbara asked us to trust her we did and put Sarite on a raw diet. Well, a miracle has happened within 24 hours her stools were normal, she actually slept through the night peacefully not going from one place to another in tummy pain. Sarite has gained weight and now looks forward to eating, and the best news is she is off all her meds,needles and her fur is gorgeous! Increased thirst and urination are hallmarks of a diabetic condition, so those are things you’ll want to watch closely for, especially as your pet ages. Unfortunately, increased thirst and urine output are also signs of other serious health problems, so regardless of the age or condition of your dog or cat, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms.
3. Increased appetite. Another symptom you might notice is increased appetite. Your pet will be hungrier because the amino acids needed inside the cells aren’t getting there, or aren’t being used appropriately.
4. Weight loss. When the cells of your pet’s body are being starved of essential nutrients, the result is often an increase in appetite.
But because the energy from food is not being used efficiently by the body’s cells, your pet can lose weight even though he’s taking in more calories.
5. Tiredness and lack of energy. Other symptoms you might notice in your pets' are lethargy and lack of energy. When the cells of your pet’s body are deprived of blood sugar, he will often exhibit a general lack of desire to run, take a walk with you, or engage in play. Lack of activity and an increased need for sleep are typical in animals suffering from Type II diabetes.
6. Vision problems. Another symptom of diabetes in companion animals is blindness, which is seen primarily in dogs, but cats can also develop blindness as a result of diabetic cataracts.
7. Urinary tract infections. It’s not at all uncommon for diabetic dogs and cats to acquire secondary urinary tract infections. This happens because the more sugar there is in the urine, the greater the likelihood that bacteria will grow in your pet’s bladder.
8. Kidney failure. Kidney failure, especially in cats, is also a common secondary symptom of diabetes. Often the first diagnosis for a diabetic kitty is chronic renal insufficiency or acute kidney problems. The sugar that is meant to be retained in your pet’s bloodstream but spills over into the urine is very damaging to the kidneys.

How safe are the "spot-on" flea killers"?
All pesticides have some degree of health risks to humans and animals.
Do you know that these spot-on flea products enter our pets' internal organs and then move straight into their intestines.
Have we questioned what these pesticides are doing to our pets immune system?
We need to strengthen their immune systems not depress them!
These are toxins that are running rampant through your pets' bodies.
Maybe that is the reason why they have all kinds of skin allergies and new cancers appearing in their bodies at such a young age.
The main ingredients in many spot-on preparations include imidacloprid, fipronil, permethrin,and pyriproxyfen.
I know you are saying what are all these ingredients doing to my pet or to me?
So, how do we continue to administer these poisons into our pets and what will happen if my pet is not protected?
To understand the risks associated with any of the flea products that are on the market you must look at the various different components in the different flea products.
Most people assume that only the "active" ingredient in a chemical product is of concern!
Well that is not true, there are "inert" ingredients that can be as toxic as the active ingredients.
So what do some of these "active" and "inert" chemicals do to our pets?
Most vets will tell you that these products are not absorbed into our pet's system, but have you ever smelled
your pets breath after you have applied the spot on pesticides? It is immediately absorbed into the system.
Let's start with the four general categories of insecticides.
Fipronil,Imidacloprid, Methoprene, Permethrin are all "active" ingredients and carcinogens!
Skin problems such as severe itching of the skin or redness, nervous system damage such as loss of appetite or underactivity are just some of the side effects to just these few "active" ingredients.
Now, these were just the listed active ingredients! Look up the "inert" ingredients on the box and you tell me in the comments what you find!
I have many clients who visit our market and tell me that their pets start biting and scratching their bodies after 7-10 days of administering their monthly topical flea product. Does this ring a bell ?
I am not writing this blog to get into the reason why pesticide manufacturers don't have to disclose all the ingredients in their products ... I am simply making you aware of the problems associated with using spot on topical flea products.

As you know I have a 10 year old American pit bull terrier "little" that has been plagued with skin allergies. Barbara hi! I'ts Barbara in Lantana. Let's see if you receive this e-mail! This morning I noticed they ate with the same gusto, but didn't eat as much. Their bodies must have realized that the food didn't have all the filler that they would burn through more quickly so they didn't have to consume as much. The Mack and Jack is still a success and they like the Asian Fusion. No vomiting today! Yay!
Boots is now 5 years with me. Right from the start, his BM has been watery and extremely smelly. At times he had some droppings on the floor. I had his stool checked by different Vet clinics, with no results. One Vet diagnosed him with irritable bowel syndrome, another with colitis. We had him on IAMS Veterinary Formula – Intestinal low Residue with no success. For months I added Plataeris drops to a little soft food. No improvement.
When the Iams was discontinued, we went back with Hills I/D.

He not only soiled in the laundry room, but all over. I don’t minded the cleaning, but he obviously was in much discomfort. I could not reach the Vet that day. I talked to a friend of mine. Within 24 hours, no more leaking stool, and no more vomit. He is back to his old self. If that is not a miracle, I don't know what is. What a relief this is for the entire household.

Great news!! Our dog Riley is recovered from his kidney failure and we'll be able to pick him up this afternoon! We have to bring him in for blood testing tomorrow, but all looks good. just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the time you took to explain the different foods and to review Bella's issues and make recommendations.
As you know, Bella has had colitis since after she was about a year old (she is now almost 3). She has alwayS been on very good quality foods as I mentioned, however, about every month or so she would have an episode. I would have to cook a bland diet and she would be better in a couple of days. The frustrating part was that even if it went away and I was always cautious with her diet, she always had a reoccurance.
You recommended the RAW. I'll be honest it was hard at first with the whole raw thing, but I would try anything if I knew it would help her. She has now been on the Primal and also during the past couple of weeks on Ziwi Peak Venison as well.
Bella looks amazing since she started her new diet!! Her skin cleared up (she had red itchy skin and thinning hair on the belly, etc). Her ears are beautiful and pink - no more red itchy ears!! She lost at least a 1 1/2! (she is a Chihuahua so that is a lot of weight) - she looks beautiful with her new thin waist and beautiful smooth coat! Best of all - no more colitis!! It's been about six weeks or so and the improvement is amazing. Thank you so much for helping my baby!!

Maggie, nine and a half (left) and Lexi, seven, next month (right) demanded that I tell you how happy they are now and how great they feel after being on their new, raw diets that you recommended. In two weeks, Lexi will have her first ever ‘itch free’ birthday! Born and raised in Arizona until we moved here in July, they are half-sisters from the same blue-ribbon winning dad but different blue-ribbon winning moms. “Dad was truly a stud”, they tell us! Lexi has always had severe allergies. Her skin was continuously developing little welts and she was forever scratching and licking herself and just plain miserable. We tired everything short of the expensive allergy tests, to figure out what was wrong. The dermatologist vet thought it was the desert grass and trees and the move here might help her. It did not.

After a month on raw formulas Lexi is welt, rash and itch free! She is full of life and one, really happy and calm girl. Maggie too is a new girl. This is a story about a year and a half baby girl named Sarite a long haired shepherd. She had stopped eating many times and was loosing weight major diarrhea and vomiting blood. She was diagnosed with Addison's disease , bleeding ulcers, and IBD (irritable bowl disease) after spending thousands of dollars at the vet, once again finding the right food was a very hard task. After meeting with Barbara and Howard after hours of talking and analyzing Sarite's eating. We were told by the vet that it would take 6 months to a year before Sarite would ever have normal bowls as well numerous meds and needles were happening at the time. After Barbara asked us to trust her we did and put Sarite on a raw diet. Well, a miracle has happened within 24 hours her stools were normal, she actually slept through the night peacefully not going from one place to another in tummy pain. Sarite has gained weight and now looks forward to eating, and the best news is she is off all her meds,needles and her fur is gorgeous!
